Choose how Uyen corrects you

Uyen can correct your words while you talk. You choose how much.

Lenient and Strict

You pick a mode when you set up Uyen. To change it, open More → Settings → Corrections. Select one:

• Lenient (default): Uyen corrects you only when your meaning is wrong or not clear. If your sentence is a little wrong but Uyen understands it, Uyen continues the talk.
• Strict: Uyen also corrects grammar, for example the verb form, the tense, masculine and feminine words, word order, and small words such as por and para. Uyen also tells you better or more natural words.

A change applies at your next Start.

Example

You order food in Spanish and say: "Dos tacos de pescado por llevar, por favor." The correct phrase is para llevar ("to go").

• Lenient: Uyen understands you and asks what you want to drink.
• Strict: Uyen tells you the correct phrase first, then continues. For example: "Se dice «para llevar». ¿Quieres algo de beber?" ("We say para llevar. Do you want something to drink?"). Under your line, you see Better: "para llevar".

When Uyen corrects you, it does not say "perfect" or "very good" about that sentence.

What Uyen does in both modes

• Uyen gives a maximum of one correction in each reply.
• Uyen waits until you finish speaking. It does not stop your story.
• Uyen does not correct your accent or your dialect.
• Uyen says the correction clearly, for example "we say…" or "you can say…" in the language you practice.
• Your difficulty sets the length of the correction. Beginner gets only the correct words. Advanced can also get one short reason. See Adjust speed, difficulty, and wait.
• The help-phrase tutorial does not use this setting.

Read a correction

A correction shows under your line in Practice and in Recent practices:

• Better: "…" — the correct words for an error.
• Try: "…" — a better word. This shows only in Strict.

Tap the line to see a short reason in your Current language. Tap again to hide it.

The line comes a short time after Uyen finishes its reply. This is normal.

Corrections in your words

When Uyen corrects a word or a phrase, it goes into the Words tab as Needs use. About three of your turns later, Uyen asks a question that gives you a chance to say it correctly. In a topic, Uyen does this only when it fits the scene. Uyen asks for each word only once in a talk. If you make the same error again, Uyen asks again later.

After you use it correctly on your own 3 times, Uyen removes the Needs use mark. If the word already needs use, the new error starts that count again. If you marked that word Known, or you ignored it, Uyen does not change it. See Track your words.

Why Uyen did not correct an error

Some errors sound almost the same as the correct words. For example, por and para can sound the same in fast speech. Speech recognition can then write the correct words in your line, so your line does not show your error.

When Uyen heard the error and says the correction ("you can say…"), the Better line still shows, and the phrase still goes into Words. Your line can show the corrected words. When Uyen did not hear the error, no correction shows.

To help Uyen hear you:

• Speak a little slower and clearly.
• Use Strict when you want each small error corrected.
• Type your reply when you want Uyen to check your exact words.
